Allegheny Loop

Tour #6... We originally planned to do the Allegheny Passage from near Pittsburgh to Washington D.C. While searching for information I came across the Allegheny Loop from Adventure Cycling. It looked very scenic and cut several hours of drive time off the trip so we made a switch at the last minute.

We didn't ride the whole loop but focused on the off-road sections. This was our most relaxed tour. One day we didn't get our hammocks out of the trees until well after lunch. That's what I call a vacation!

Lessons Learned:

  • Knee pain kicked in the first day... need to make sure enough miles are ridden consistently before tours.
  • Adventure Cycling maps are nice and really reduce the amount of planning time.
  • We had virtually zero cell phone coverage from start to finish.
  • Laying in hammocks all day reading books and sleeping makes for a fun vacation.

Services Used:

  • Adventure Cycline Allegheny Loop map - recommended for sure.
  • Greenbrier Gill & Lodge, Marlinton, WV - Was the recommended place to eat - it was marginal at best.
  • Grocery store in Marlinton was pretty good.
  • Restaurant at CASS iwas pretty good, convenience store down the road was well stocked.
  • Camped near Middle Mtn Cabins in Monongahela National Forest, pretty nice spot since no one was around.
  • Convenience store in Bartow was well stocked - pretty much a small grocery store.
